BWii Desert climate with extremely hot summer with extremely hot winter
Traditional Koppen classification: BWh (Hot desert climate)

Official definition:
  • B – 70 % or more of the total annual rainfall is during the summer half of the year and r (r = average total annual precipitation in mm) is less than 20t + 280 (t = average annual temperature in °C), or 70 % or more of total annual precipitation is during the winter half of the year and r is less than 20t, or no half of the year has less than 70 % of total annual rainfall and r less than 20t + 140. Summer half of the year in the Northern hemisphere is from April to September, on the Southern hemisphere from October to March.
  • W – r is less than the upper limit for B type classification parameter
  • h - t is greater than or equal to 18 °C

The desert climate is characterized by extremely small rainfall. In general it includes areas, which have such little precipitation, that there is hardly any vegetation at all.

The total annual precipitation is at most 250 mm, but quite often much less and regions with no rainfall during the entire year are not an exception. In specific cases this climate type is also assigned to places with more than 250 mm of rainfall annually, but where more water is lost by evapotranspiration than falls with rain (for example some parts in Arizona).

Hot desert climate is also defined by very high temperatures all year round. Most commonly these regions are around the 30 ° latitude on both hemispheres. Temperatures can be extreme, exceeding 40 °C and sometimes even above 45 °C. However, due to the fact they are usually far inland, the differences between day and night can also be extreme and during night it is sometimes even freezing. Areas with BWh climate type are the ones where the absolutely highest temperatures on Earth have been measured (Death Valley, some parts in Libya etc.).

The most well-known region with this climate is the largest desert on Earth, the Sahara in Africa. Other areas with this climate include the deserts in Libya, parts in southern Africa (Namib desert, Kalahari desert), some parts of Mexico, large areas especially in the central Australia and also some regions in the Middle East.

Very low precipitation also means very little cloudiness, some regions can have clouds only less than 30 days per year.

Modern Trewartha classification: BWii (Desert climate with extremely hot summer with extremely hot winter)

Desert, in other words arid, climate is characterized by extremely small precipitation. In Koppen classification it is further subdivided into types h and k. Deserts can be both hot and cold. It could be said that it basically includes areas, which although are not classified as polar regions, are in some aspects quite similar to them, especially by the almost complete absence of vegetation due to water insufficiency.

Arid regions have annual precipitation of less than 250 mm, but often much less and there are even areas where there are years with absolutely no rain at all.

Hot desert climate is most often found at around 30 ° latitude, bordering the subtropical zones. There is minimal cloudiness all year round and temperatures are extremely high, often above 40 °C, in some places even more than 45 °C. It in fact includes the warmest places on Earth, however, this is not to say it is not cold here at all. Due to the minimal cloud cover, it cools down very rapidly after sunset and sometimes even freezes in the early morning hours, just before sunrise. Hot deserts are found especially in Northern Africa, the most well-known is the largest desert on Earth, the Sahara desert. Then there are also hot deserts in the Middle East, Central and West Australia or some parts of Southwest U.S. and Southwest Africa.

Cold desert regions have a slightly misleading name because the word “cold” must be considered in context – summers here are still extremely hot and dry. In the winter however, temperatures drop quite significantly, sometimes well below freezing point. Cold desert regions are often found in places with higher altitude. Regions with this climate type are for example in Central Asia, the most well-known is the Mongolian Gobi desert.

  • extremely hot summer: warmest month with average temperature above 35 °C
  • extremely hot winter: coldest month with average temperature above 35 °C
